I love that weather here is dramatic, even in summer. Sultry morning, 95 degree day, a breeze picking up, a threateningly dark sky, zig zag lightning bolt in the center of the dark, everyone scrambling out of the pool.
Food has also been summer fun. There's a farm right up the road where the animals roam freely and the children can feed them...tiny fuzzy ducklings, sleek white rabbits, pigs, horses, cow, goats, a parrot who will say, "Hello. How are you?" They have a new sign out front: "No trip to Kiawah would be complete without a trip to Rosebank." --Martha
Regardless of how you might feel about Martha (or Kiawah, the more Martha-like neighboring island), when she stands up for a farm down the road from you, you know you'll find "good things."
A trip to the farm inspired a quick dinner of succotash of fresh butterbeans and corn, sauteed garlic shrimp, and roasted red potatoes. Summer yum. In a place hot enough that watermelon for dessert seems appropriate.
So, I've gotten wind that there are a bunch of you here with me--beloved second cousins, long-lost friends, soupsters, mamas. I'm so touched. I'm so grateful. I'm downright tickled. Seriously, this is the only home I know at the moment and I'm glad to meet you here for our chat (over tea, a forest walk, dog walk, playground chat, porch swing and all the other places where we've had the chance to do it in real time and hopefully will again). But when you lurk there, I don't know who you are! And you know how much I relish that one-on-one connection. Even here. So, I'm asking you to comment when you read this post. And I'll make it easy for you. A question...
What is your favorite thing about summer where you are right now?
I admit, I've got two, because you wouldn't ask me to choose between local peaches dripping their juice all over our shirts and thunderstorms, would you? (The tan line on Isaiah's back is a close third.)
So, come out, come out wherever you are. And in the spirit of becoming the philanthropist I aim to be (thanks, Susana), for each comment, I'll donate $1 to the local homeless shelter, the group I feel most sympatico with at the moment. (Though I am so thoroughly blessed to instead be taking it very comfortably at grandma and grandpa's.)
Thanks for playing!
